Signup/Login

Crossword Connect is a multi-player game in which you partner up with your friends to play crossword puzzles. In order to facilitate partnering up with your friends, we require you to provide your email address which is an easy way for your friends to find you and vice versa. It is also a handy unique identifier for you to remember to use when logging in in the future.

Please review our privacy policy which, among other things, makes it clear that we don't use your email for anything other than creating your account and allowing friends who already know your email address to start games with you. We will never sell your email address or share it with any third parties. We will send you a welcome email and may send you follow-up email messages in the future that are relevant to your game play. You can opt out of these email messages at any time.
You need to provide us with an email address, username and password to sign up. Alternatively, you can sign in with Facebook if you have a Facebook account. Signing up with a Facebook account doesn't require a username or password.
If you forgot your password, you can reset it by following this link and entering your email address. We will email you a token that can be used to reset your password. Follow the link in the email for the specific steps to follow.

Privacy

Please review our privacy policy which, among other things, makes it clear that we don't use your Facebook friend list for anything other than making it easy for you to invite your friends to play a game with you. We then only contact friends with whom you have specifically chosen to start a game. We don't store your Facebook friend list or send it to our server in any usable way other than to let you know which of your friends already has Crossword Connect installed. If you want to know the nitty gritty details, we only send one-way hashes of your Facebook friends' Facebook IDs to our server which means that we don't see the actual IDs, only opaque strings which we can use to match them up with ones already computed for existing users. We do this in order to protect your privacy and security.

We've found that users are shy about sharing their Facebook friend list and contact list with apps because of unscrupulous behavior by other apps in the past. We understand that you don't want to inadvertently send spammy invitations to all of your friends and that's not the kind of thing we would ever try to get our users to do. The reason that we incentivize users to access their Facebook friend list and their contact list is that we think that the game is more fun when you play it with your friends. And users who play with their friends as opposed to playing with random strangers are more likely to continue to play the app in the long term. So we are really just trying to encourage our users to get the most that they can get out of the game.

Game Play

You can start a new game at any time by tapping on the New Game button in the top left hand corner of the Main Menu (which is the screen you start out on after logging in). You can choose to start either a single-player or multi-player game.
Currently there is only one mode of multi-player game which is collaborative freeplay. This means that you and your partner work together trying to solve the puzzle. The only restriction is that one player cannot complete most of the board, you need to work together. You can come and go as you please while playing the game and you can work on the puzzle together at the same time or at different times. You will see your partner's updates after they make them or the next time you play if you aren't currently on the game board. Your contributions will be shown in your color (check the pen/pencil icon on the keyboard to see which color you are playing with) and your partner's contributions will be shown in their color.
We can't force anyone to play a game with you, so if your partner stops playing with you for an extended period of time, the game will automatically be resigned. If you want to resign the game yourself, you can swipe left on the game in the main menu and then click the 'Resign' button.

Starting with version 1.0.2, you can change partners or convert a mutli-player game to a single-player game and keep your progress as long as your partner hasn't played the game at all. You can do this from the Game Info view (tap the 'i' symbol in the top right hand corner of the game board) or by swiping left on the game in the main menu. You can also now resign games from the Game Info view as well.

You can also start any number of other multi-player games with other players at the same time for free. Just click the 'New Game' button in the top left corner of the main menu.
Currently you can play as many multi-player games with as many partners as you wish for free. Single player games must be purchased with coins.
In multi-player games each player has a different color so that you can tell who contributed which answers. If you would like to set your own personal pen colors, tap the Settings icon in the top right corner of the Main Menu, then choose "Account". From the Account screen you can choose a primary and secondary color choice. There are two color choices because each player in a game will have a different color. The initiator of the game will always get their first color choice. The partner will then get their first color choice unless it is the same as the initiator's in which case they will get their second choice.
You can only play each puzzle once. If you are currently playing a puzzle or have completed a puzzle, you are no longer shown that puzzle when you start a new game. If you are starting a multi-player puzzle with a partner, you will also not see puzzles which your partner is currently playing or has completed. If you have a puzzle which you are playing, but you want to start it over (e.g. your partner has abandoned the game), then you can resign the game by swiping left on the game in the Main Menu and then tapping the Resign button. You will then be able to see this puzzle when you start a new game.
Most of the app will not currently work without an Internet connection. However, if you start a game you can lose you Internet connection and your changes will be saved locally to your device. You will get a warning that pops up on top of the game board when the loss of connection is detected. Once you re-connect to the Internet, your changes will be pushed up to the server and available for your partner to see. If you leave the game board while you still have no Internet connection, you need to make sure to go back to the game board later when you have an Internet connection to make sure that your changes are pushed up to the server.

Coins

Currently there are two things that you can buy with coins: new single player games and hints. To purchase hints, tap the Hint button in the bottom left corner of the keyboard in the game screen. The hints that you can currently buy are: reveal the current letter, reveal the current word, and reveal all mistakes on the game board.
You can either earn or buy new coins. When you sign up a new account you get some coins to get started. You can go to the Store at any time by clicking on your coin total at the top of the Main Menu or in the Settings screen. In the Store, you can either purchase new coins or earn them by watching video ads. You can also earn coins through the following achievements:

  • Completing a game
  • Liking us on Facebook
  • Following us on Twitter
  • Looking up your friends on your Facebook friend list or contact list
  • Inviting a friend to play a game with you
  • Sharing your completed game on Twitter

Hints

The 'Reveal a Letter' hint will fill in the currently selected letter on the board with the correct letter for that clue.
The 'Reveal a Word' hint will fill in the currently selected word on the board with the correct solution for that clue.
The 'Reveal All Mistakes' hint will highlight in red every letter which is not correct on the board. Note that if you change one of the red highlighted letters it will no longer have a red background, but that doesn't mean that your new letter is correct. After you have purchased the 'Reveal All Mistakes' hint for a puzzle, you can always select it again for no charge and it will again highlight all mistakes if you want to check if your replacement letters are correct. Also note that the highlighting goes away if you leave the board and come back, but you can select in again for no charge if you want to see the mistakes again. Currently your partner does not see the incorrect highlighted letters.
